Description:

A mid-19th century cross of the Russian military order of Saint George, made of gold and covered with white enamel on both sides. Central medallion has a high quality hand-painted depiction of horseman Saint George slaying the Dragon on pink background one side and order's cipher on the other. The cross comes with an original gold loop wire and is marked with maker's mark "S * A," Town mark of Saint Petersburg and "56" zolotniks (14 k) gold purity mark. It measures approx. 34 mm across. It comes presented on attractive contemporary brass suspension device with correct orange-black striped ribbon


This order was most likely bestowed during the Crimean war of 1853 - 1856 or Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878.

Condition: Superb original condition, ever so tiny hair cracks and dirt on white enamel and very minor cosmetic scratches on the gold surface as shown.
